What was once a vacant Toys "R" Us and BuyBuy Baby is now setting a new standard for sustainable healthcare

At McKesson, we understand that the spaces where we work, distribute and care have a profound impact on our planet and people. In FY24, we developed McKesson's Green Building Standards (GBS) - an internal sustainability framework that provides guidance for eligible building design, construction and operations projects. Across our offices, distribution centers and eligible healthcare buildings, GBS is intended to support environmental performance, operational efficiency and employee well-being. Since inception, we've assessed 52 buildings and achieved 17 GBS certifications, including three Platinum, two Gold, 11 Silver and one Compliant.

Compass Oncology, a practice in the US Oncology Network, recently became the first medical building to earn McKesson GBS certification at its East Cancer Center in Happy Valley, Oregon.

The achievement is particularly notable because the facility was transformed from a former retail store into a modern healthcare environment developing its East Cancer Center, Compass Oncology partnered with the McKesson Real Estate team to repurpose the existing structure to GBS and create a space designed to support patients, caregivers and employees.

Compass Oncology's East Cancer Center earned GBS Silver credit through a range of sustainability and wellness-focused features:

  • Energy and performance: High-efficiency HVAC systems and STAR appliances
  • Air Quality & Health: Enhanced air filtration supporting an indoor environment
  • Water Stewardship: Water-efficient plumbing fixtures that conserve resources
  • Materials & Carbon Impact: Adaptive reuse strategies that embodied carbon
  • Wellness & Experience: Bike racks and a thoughtfully designed garden that support employee well-being

"At McKesson, we believe advancing health outcomes includes a commitment to creating healthier environments for the people and communities we serve, said Nimesh Jhaveri, R.Ph., Executive Vice President and Chief Impact Officer at McKesson. "Compass Oncology's achievement is an important milestone, not only as the first medical building to earn Green Building Standards certification, but also as a powerful example of how sustainability can be integrated into healthcare settings."

Congratulations to Compass Oncology and the McKesson Real Estate team on this pioneering accomplishment!
